Two pendants or three

Filed 24 July 2026Design Decisions3 min read

Long kitchen island with three brass lantern pendants centred above it

Three pendants work here because the island earns them. The length of the island establishes the rhythm; the fixtures reinforce it rather than compete with the architecture.

Pendant placement is one of the most common things that can make an island feel and look off.

So: how many pendants should go over the island?

My answer usually starts with a measurement, not a preference.

If the island is 72 to 83 inches, two pendants are right. From 84 to 95 inches, I might use two or three. At 96 inches and over, I use three.

This kitchen is a good example of why.

The island is long, so three lanterns feel natural here. They give the length of the island a nice rhythm without making the ceiling feel busy.

The part people notice without noticing

Then there is the centerline.

I want the pendants to follow the center of the island and line up with the architecture around it. When I’m working through a kitchen, I like to establish that line before the electrical is finalized. It gives everyone a simple point to work from.

One thing worth saying to whoever is doing the work: mark that line off the island framing, not off the wall. Walls move during a build. The island is set.

And when the spacing is right, something interesting happens.

You stop seeing the individual pendants.

You just see a kitchen that feels settled.

The island decides. The pendant follows.

That’s really what I’m looking for. Not a certain number of fixtures, or a particular style of lantern.

Just the right relationship between the light, the island, and the room.

And when it is right, the lighting doesn’t compete with the architecture.

It makes the architecture make sense.
